Currently on maternity leave, Jean is a DPhil candidate in Oriental Studies researching the history and archaeology of early medieval Manchuria. Her thesis focuses on the identity of pre-state groups active in Manchuria during the 5th to 7th centuries and their significance within the context of Korean history. Jean was born in South Korea but lived in Germany, Poland, the United States, and France during her formative years. Prior to Oxford, Jean completed a master's degree in Regional Studies - East Asia at Harvard University and a bachelor's in history at Carleton College. Jean enjoys horseback riding, traveling, and attempting to revive the Oxford Manchu Language Group with mixed success.
